One sunny day in August, I came home from work and sat down on our couch. “How was work?” Kat asked as she opened us a couple of Coronas. She had gotten home just a few minutes before me. We had both mastered the art of “being in a sales meeting” well enough to be home before the beach traffic reached its peak. And since we both were well above our respective “quota” for the year, no one bothered us. Our bosses had other things to worry about.

“Same. Boring. I did well but accomplished nothing in the big scheme of things,” I rattled off, not really paying attention to my words.

“You still want to buy a pizza place?” she asked, only half joking. We had been brainstorming for months. We wanted to run a fun little business together. We were so stifled by the corporate life. We were great “mom & pop” proprietors of a small business, although on paper we were a bit overqualified to run a pizza shop.

“No…..but, I’d love to run a beach bar in the Caribbean,” I slowly replied. “That would be the life,” I whispered, daydreaming a bit.

Then it hit us. NO children. If we were never going to have children, we could take more risks. We could travel anywhere. Do anything. So we started brainstorming “outside the box”.

“You know, my job would be great if I had 4 kids and a wife that didn’t work,” I said.

“Mine, too,” Kat responded with a smile. She was independent, a real worker. Hot chick. Great career. I could see her coming home from the office, to some hot young chick making her dinner. She deserved it. More on this later….

“Why don’t we run a strip club?” She blurted out. She was the crazy one.

“I like your thinking….but, it would never work.” I was always a bit more practical and a lot less creative.

But wait.

We had run businesses in new industries before. After all, it was just a bar business with dancers, right? Kat had run a few beauty contests in San Diego, and that was fun. She knew how to handle dozens of bikini models. I had run a bar in college. “I was thinking a beach bar…..but, how about a strip club on an island resort?” A fantasy compromise, I laughed to myself. If you’re going to go, go big. But, I was only joking.

She wasn’t.

“Why not?” she asked, hearing the sarcasm and fantasy in my voice.

I doubted this would ever go anywhere, but it didn’t hurt to look into it? At worst, I would waste a few hours looking into the strip club business. I daydreamed… Would research include lap dances? Ha! “Due Diligence” in the “Champagne Room”? Why was she interested, I wondered? That was easy. She liked girls. Stripper kind of girls.

After a few long seconds of thought, I responded “OK. It could be interesting. Let’s look into it.”

I could laugh it off as impractical, and go back to my boring job, or I could embrace her creativity, boldness and at least have fun with this fantasy. So, for the next few hours, I typed in every combination of “strip club,” “island” and “beach” I could think of into Google.

A brothel in Costa Rica? Ick. We had no moral objection to prostitution between consenting adults, but we sure as hell didn’t want to be in that business.

Then, we found something…. A strip club on a Caribbean Island? Sun, sand and sex…the perfect combination. Kat was interested. Of course, I thought it was a joke, or some kind of “marital test” by Kat. But, it was fun. And, we thought we would probably have really hot nasty sex just thinking about running a strip club someday. At the end of the day, hot sex with a wife you love is really the most important thing anyway…

I promised myself that I would go along with this idea. However long or deep my hot little corporate wife wanted to explore this fantasy, I was up for it. I thought it might be a trick. I knew that no matter what, this would certainly be interesting—wherever it ended up. She could change her mind later tonight, or next month, or never. But, is sure was more fun than looking into buying a paperclip manufacturing company in Detroit. The local start up I was talking to could take off tomorrow and we could stay there for years. We were also looking at expanding our little property management and real estate business and maybe buying, fixing up and selling some houses. We could decide to move out of our small condo and buy a real house. Or, we could have fun talking about this idea. Looking into this idea. Having a blast together. I did not want to work around the clock for the money when the love of my life just wanted adventure and more time together.

We had vacationed in the Caribbean, but rarely ventures off resort property…. I wonder what it would be like to live there and run a business. Dangerous, I bet.
